• Pile testing – Compression and Load testing, to SPERWALL criteria.
• Off-site Steel Frame Fabrication
• On-site steel Frame installation
• Off-site production of custom GRP flooring.
• On-site installation of GRP flooring

Cowran Estate Services recently completed its first major project as a Principal contractor with the construction of an 80 plus meter Steel Framed Boardwalk situated in the picturesque Harbour town of Maryport Cumbria. The Boardwalk creates a link between the Harbour Wall and across the area known locally as ‘’Lal Beach’’ and seamlessly ties into the Promenade creating a user-friendly access route for all.

As with any construction project this one was certainly not without its challenges, the boardwalk is spec’d for a 40 year lifespan.  Great care was to be taken with the Galvanized steel frame, ensuring that the coatings did not become damaged, with this a key principal of the design we had to ensure that the interface between the piles and framework were absolutely on point to ensure no drilling was required on site and subsequent damage of the Galv coatings.

The screw piles themselves were technically difficult to install, with some hitting depths of 7+ Meters before torque was achieved and keeping these perfectly aligned at such depth was a challenge within itself.

A rigours testing schedule was also performed on the piles to ensure that they matched the criteria for the challenging environment, where tidal forces will come in to place.

The hard-wearing nonslip GRP flooring was sourced internationally, with project team members making a visit to the factory to ensure that everything was up to standards and met the tolerances required and the supply chain was on track.

A key aesthetic feature of the Boardwalk is the Oak seating and Safety kick rails, there is some 13 + tons of timber contained within the structure all of which was locally  sourced and milled within Cumbria.

The project was performed within the winter months and as with any project in a Marine environment the elements were against the team, creating a hard and harsh work environment.
