Maryport Boardwalk

Principal Contractor delivery of an 80+ metre steel-framed boardwalk across tidal ground at Maryport harbour.

Cowran Estate Services delivered Maryport Boardwalk as Principal Contractor for Cumberland Council, leading the project from mobilisation, procurement and setting out through foundations, steelwork, decking, public-realm interfaces and completion. The route connects the harbour wall across Lal Beach to the promenade, creating an accessible coastal link designed for long-term public use.

The challenge

The structure had to be built through winter on exposed tidal ground while protecting a galvanised steel frame designed for a 40-year service life. Deep screw piles, structural tolerances, off-site fabrication, specialist GRP, locally sourced oak and live public interfaces all had to be coordinated as one construction sequence.

Delivery outcome

The completed boardwalk provides an accessible route between Maryport's harbour wall, Lal Beach and the promenade. It records Cowran's ability to hold Principal Contractor responsibility across deep foundations, structural coordination, specialist procurement, coastal working conditions and a public-facing finish.

How the boardwalk was built.

The project combined deep foundations, protected structural steelwork and specialist public-realm finishes in one exposed coastal construction sequence.

Foundations

Deep screw piles held to line in tidal ground.

More than 50 screw piles formed the boardwalk substructure. Some reached approximately 7.5 metres before the required torque was achieved, with alignment, compression testing and load testing controlled as part of the foundation package.

Structure

Fabrication tolerances protected the finished frame.

The galvanised steelwork was fabricated off site and coordinated closely with the installed piles. Accurate interfaces avoided remedial drilling on site and protected the coating that underpins the structure's durability.

Public realm

Specialist materials resolved for exposed public use.

Custom non-slip GRP decking was checked at the factory before installation. Locally sourced Cumbrian oak seating and kick rails, concrete ramps and reinstated handrails completed the accessible coastal route.
