South Walney Sea Defence

Day-to-day site leadership across complex coastal engineering and environmental delivery.

Cowran Estate Services led day-to-day site delivery across management, engineering, plant and operators, coastal protection interfaces and environmental landscaping on South Walney. Metcalfe held the formal Principal Contractor appointment; Cowran's team carried substantial responsibility for organising, coordinating and driving the work on the ground.

The challenge

An exposed coastal site brought together erosion protection, sensitive environmental controls, planting, material logistics and multiple contractor interfaces. Delivery demanded confident site leadership across changing weather, tides, technical dependencies and a live programme.

The whole defence, understood at one glance.

The design threads marine protection, access and habitat along one constrained shoreline. Cowran Estate Services delivered the works within this defined coastal footprint.

The coastal section that explains the build.

This section exposes the complete engineered build-up: anchored revegetation above, a lined and filtered revetment through the slope, and a buried armoured toe tied into the beach.

Environmental strategy

Environmental engineering, drawn into the works.

The environmental layer is integral rather than decorative: retained turf, coastal-meadow coir and pioneer shingle planting are coordinated with the defence and public-access route.
